Marc Schier a81d981755 dotnet format sweep (whitespace, IDE, RCS) + code-style enforcer agent fix (#3865)
# Description

Pure code-style sweep across the repo — no behavioral changes. Drives
`dotnet format` info-level diagnostics down on a large slice of the
codebase (Stack, Libraries, Tests, Tools).

Six commits, applied bottom-up in safety order so each batch leaves the
build green:

1. **`style: fix whitespace and final-newline formatting (WHITESPACE,
FINALNEWLINE)`**
   197 hits across ~30 files; pure mechanical cleanup.

2. **`style: apply dotnet format style fixes (IDE rules)`**
IDE-rule batch via `dotnet format style --severity info` —
`var`/explicit type, simplify names, collection expressions, expression
bodies, unused usings, etc.

3. **`style: apply dotnet format analyzers fixes (RCS blank-line
formatting)`**
   Roslynator formatting (RCS0xxx) blank-line and punctuation rules.

4. **`style: convert comments to doc comments and inline local vars
(RCS1181, RCS1124)`**
24 files. RCS1181 promotes `// summary`-style comments above
public/internal members to `/// <summary>` doc comments; RCS1124 inlines
locals used exactly once. Generated `Tools/` files were reverted to keep
the source-generator outputs deterministic.

5. **`docs(agent): correct --diagnostics flag form and verify Roslynator
4.x code fixers`**
Updates `.github/agents/opc-ua-codestyle-enforcer.agent.md` with two
corrections discovered while running this sweep:
- `dotnet format --diagnostics "RULE1 RULE2"` (single quoted,
space-separated) silently fixes nothing on `dotnet format` 10.x — it
parses as one unknown ID and exits 0. The correct form is `--diagnostics
RULE1 --diagnostics RULE2 …`, repeated per rule.
- Roslynator 4.15.0 **does** ship code fixers for
RCS1078/1118/1124/1140/1142/1181/1221/1260 (the previous "no auto-fixer"
list was outdated). RCS1140/1142 default to `Hidden` so need `--severity
info` to surface and fire; RCS1078 requires
`roslynator_empty_string_style = field` (already set in
`.editorconfig`). Only NUnit4002/2046/2010 genuinely lack auto-fixers in
this stack.

6. **`style: format new code from master merge (dotnet format sweep)`**
After merging master into the branch (commit `e3ebc8742`), re-ran the
same three-phase format sweep on the 151 .cs files brought in by the
merge, scoped per project via repeated `--include`. 81 files changed;
same rule families as commits 1–4.
- Hand-fixed `Tests/Opc.Ua.MigrationAnalyzer.Tests/AnalyzerHarness.cs`
for `RCS1174` (redundant `async`/`await` removal) because the auto-fixer
didn't apply for that specific case.
   - Reverted files that the formatter would break:
- `Libraries/Opc.Ua.Server/Server/ServerInternalData.cs` — multi-TFM
analysis disagreement injected `<<<<<<<` / `=======` / `>>>>>>>`
markers.
-
`Tools/Opc.Ua.MigrationAnalyzer.Core/{Core/Stack/Client/ChannelBase.cs,
Core/Stack/Types/IUserIdentityTokenHandler.cs,
Client/Session/Session.cs}` — IDE0005 removed `using
Opc.Ua.Security.Certificates` that IS used (the files are 1.5.378
reference fixtures for the analyzer).
- `Tests/Opc.Ua.Gds.Tests/PushTest.cs` — IDE0002 over-simplified
`OpcUa.ObjectTypeIds` to `ObjectTypeIds`, which then resolves to a
conflicting type.

### What this PR does **not** touch

- No behavioral or semantic logic changes.
- No `.editorconfig` rule promotions (rules stay at their current
severities; this is a backlog-burndown pass, not a rule tightening).
- Generated source under `Tools/` is intentionally excluded.
- Higher-risk rule families (`RCS1090`/`CA2007` `ConfigureAwait`,
`RCS1249` null-forgiving cleanup, `IDE0270`/`IDE0059`) are left for
follow-up sweeps because they need per-TFM build verification or
semantic review.

## Related Issues

_No tracking issue — this is a non-functional style sweep and the
agent-doc correction is a follow-up to the same work. Happy to open one
if the maintainers prefer._

## Checklist

- [ ] I have signed the
[CLA](https://opcfoundation.org/license/cla/ContributorLicenseAgreementv1.0.pdf)
and read the
[CONTRIBUTING](https://github.com/OPCFoundation/UA-.NETStandard/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md)
doc.
- [x] I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my
feature works and increased code coverage. _(N/A — style-only, no
behavioral change)_
- [x] I have added all necessary documentation. _(agent doc updated with
the two corrections)_
- [x] I have verified that my changes do not introduce (new) build or
analyzer warnings. _(verified clean on `net10.0` and `net48`; only
pre-existing `NETSDK1005`/`NETSDK1207` failures on Tools/AOT projects)_
- [ ] I ran **all** tests locally using the **UA.slnx** solution against
at least .net **framework** and .net **10**, and all passed. _(build
verified on net10 and net48 per batch; full test suite not yet run
locally — relying on CI)_
- [ ] I fixed **all** failing and flaky tests in the CI pipelines and
**all** CodeQL warnings.
- [ ] I have addressed **all** PR feedback received.

OPC UA Model Design File Schema Documentation

Overview

The UA Model Design Schema is a proprietary schema that supports a more visual modelling experience defining OPC UA types and instances. This definition is used by the model compiler and source generator to generate code, documentation, and validate model consistency.

The schema allows modellers to:

Note: This schema is not part of the official OPC UA specification. The official definition of nodes and references is in the form of .Nodeset2.xml whose schema is defined in OPC UA Part 6 - Annex F. This code is used internally to convert .Nodeset2.xml files to this schema format.

    DefaultLocale="en">

    <Namespaces>
        <Namespace Name="MyNamespace"
                   Prefix="Example.MyModel">
            http://example.com/MyModel
        </Namespace>
    </Namespaces>

  "DefaultLocale": "en",
  "Namespaces": [
    {
      "Name": "MyNamespace",
      "Prefix": "Example.MyModel",
      "Content": "http://example.com/MyModel"
    }
  ],

        http://opcfoundation.org/UA/
    </Namespace>
</Namespaces>
{
  "Namespaces": [
    {
      "Name": "Core",
      "Prefix": "Opc.Ua",
      "InternalPrefix": "Opc.Ua.Server",
      "XmlNamespace": "http://opcfoundation.org/UA/2008/02/Types.xsd",

3. Permission Management

Permission Management controls access and security for nodes.

Permission Sets (Global)

Define reusable permission configurations at the model level.

<PermissionSets>
    <PermissionSet Name="AdminPermissions">
        <RolePermission Role="Administrator">
            <Permission>All</Permission>
        </RolePermission>
        <RolePermission Role="Guest">
            <Permission>Browse</Permission>
            <Permission>Read</Permission>
        </RolePermission>
    </PermissionSet>
</PermissionSets>
{
  "PermissionSets": [
    {
      "Name": "AdminPermissions",
      "RolePermissions": [
        {
          "Role": "Administrator",
          "Permissions": ["All"]
        },
        {
          "Role": "Guest",
          "Permissions": ["Browse", "Read"]
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Role-Based Permissions

Each node can have role-specific permissions. Available permissions include:

  • Browse - Browse the node
  • Read - Read the node value
  • Write - Write the node value
  • ReadHistory - Read node history
  • InsertHistory, ModifyHistory, DeleteHistory
  • ReceiveEvents - Subscribe to node events
  • Call - Invoke methods
  • AddReference, RemoveReference
  • DeleteNode, AddNode
  • All, AllRead, None

Common Patterns

Node Design Pattern

All nodes share common attributes and child elements:

graph LR
    A["NodeDesign"] --> B["Attributes"]
    A --> C["Child Elements"]

    B --> B1["SymbolicName"]
    B --> B2["SymbolicId"]
    B --> B3["NumericId/StringId"]
    B --> B4["WriteAccess"]
    B --> B5["ReleaseStatus"]
    B --> B6["Purpose"]

    C --> C1["BrowseName"]
    C --> C2["DisplayName"]
    C --> C3["Description"]
    C --> C4["Children"]

    C --> C6["RolePermissions"]
    C --> C7["AccessRestrictions"]

Key Attributes (on all nodes):

  • SymbolicName - Local identifier (required)
  • SymbolicId - Globally unique identifier (auto-generated if not specified)
  • NumericId - UA numeric node ID
  • StringId - UA string node ID (alternative to NumericId)
  • IsDeclaration - Node is declared elsewhere (no code generation)
  • WriteAccess - Bitmask of writable attributes
  • PartNo - Which part of specification defines it
  • Category - Comma-separated categories
  • ReleaseStatus - See Release Status
  • Purpose - See Purpose
  • IsDynamic - Node value may change during runtime

Instance Design Pattern

Instances (Object, Variable, Method) inherit from InstanceDesign:

<Object SymbolicName="MyInstance"
        Declaration="ua:BaseObjectType"
        TypeDefinition="MyObjectType"
        ModellingRule="Mandatory"
        MinCardinality="0"
        MaxCardinality="0"
        PreserveDefaultAttributes="false"
        DesignToolOnly="false">
    <!-- Content -->
</Object>
{
  "Object": {
    "SymbolicName": "MyInstance",
    "Declaration": "ua:BaseObjectType",
    "TypeDefinition": "MyObjectType",
    "ModellingRule": "Mandatory",
    "MinCardinality": 0,
    "MaxCardinality": 0,
    "PreserveDefaultAttributes": false,
    "DesignToolOnly": false
  }
}

Modelling Rules:

  • None - Not constrained
  • Mandatory - Must be present in instances
  • Optional - May be present
  • MandatoryShared - Shared mandatory instance
  • OptionalPlaceholder - Optional placeholder
  • MandatoryPlaceholder - Mandatory placeholder
  • ExposesItsArray - Array elements exposed separately
  • CardinalityRestriction - Cardinality is restricted

See also: Node Design Pattern

Reference Pattern

References create semantic relationships between nodes. See ReferenceTypeDesign for type definitions.

<References>
    <Reference IsInverse="false" IsOneWay="false">
        <ReferenceType>ua:HasComponent</ReferenceType>
        <TargetId>MyTargetNode</TargetId>
    </Reference>
</References>
{
  "References": [
    {
      "IsInverse": false,
      "IsOneWay": false,
      "ReferenceType": "ua:HasComponent",
      "TargetId": "MyTargetNode"
    }
  ]
}

Attributes:

  • IsInverse - Reference direction is inverted
  • IsOneWay - Only forward reference exists

Access Control

Access Restrictions

Nodes can specify security requirements:

<AccessRestrictions>SigningRequired</AccessRestrictions>
<AccessRestrictions>EncryptionRequired</AccessRestrictions>
{
  "AccessRestrictions": [
    "SigningRequired",
    "EncryptionRequired"
  ]
}

Available Restrictions:

  • SigningRequired - Messages must be signed
  • EncryptionRequired - Messages must be encrypted
  • SessionRequired - Active session required
  • SessionWithSigningRequired - Session + signing
  • SessionWithEncryptionRequired - Session + encryption
  • (AndApplyToBrowse variants) - Restrictions apply to browse operations

Role-Based Access

Assign permissions to roles using RolePermissions. See Role-Based Permissions for available permission types.

<RolePermissions Name="MyPermissions" DoNotInheirit="false">
    <RolePermission Role="Administrator">
        <Permission>All</Permission>
    </RolePermission>
    <RolePermission Role="User">
        <Permission>Browse</Permission>
        <Permission>Read</Permission>
    </RolePermission>
</RolePermissions>
{
  "RolePermissions": {
    "Name": "MyPermissions",
    "DoNotInherit": false,
    "RolePermissions": [
      {
        "Role": "Administrator",
        "Permissions": ["All"]
      },
      {
        "Role": "User",
        "Permissions": ["Browse", "Read"]
      }
    ]
  }
}

Complex Types

DataType with Fields

Fields define the structure of complex DataType definitions.

<DataType SymbolicName="UserIdentity">
    <Fields>
        <Field Name="UserId" DataType="xs:int" Identifier="1" />
        <Field Name="UserName" DataType="xs:string" Identifier="2" />
        <Field Name="Email" DataType="xs:string" Identifier="3" IsOptional="true" />
        <Field Name="Permissions" DataType="xs:unsignedInt" BitMask="Permissions" />
    </Fields>
</DataType>
{
  "DataType": {
    "SymbolicName": "UserIdentity",
    "Fields": [
      {
        "Name": "UserId",
        "DataType": "xs:int",
        "Identifier": 1
      },
      {
        "Name": "UserName",
        "DataType": "xs:string",
        "Identifier": 2
      },
      {

DataType with Encodings

Encodings define how DataType instances are serialized.

<DataType SymbolicName="MyStructure">
    <Encodings>
        <Encoding SymbolicName="MyStructureXml"
                  TypeDefinition="ua:DataTypeEncodingType">
            <DisplayName>XML Encoding</DisplayName>
        </Encoding>
        <Encoding SymbolicName="MyStructureBinary"
                  TypeDefinition="ua:DataTypeEncodingType">
            <DisplayName>Binary Encoding</DisplayName>
        </Encoding>
    </Encodings>
</DataType>
{
  "DataType": {
    "SymbolicName": "MyStructure",
    "Encodings": [
      {
        "SymbolicName": "MyStructureXml",
        "TypeDefinition": "ua:DataTypeEncodingType",
        "DisplayName": "XML Encoding"
      },
      {
        "SymbolicName": "MyStructureBinary",
        "TypeDefinition": "ua:DataTypeEncodingType",
        "DisplayName": "Binary Encoding"
      }
    ]
  }
}

Hierarchical Structure

Complete Example with Hierarchy

Demonstrates how ObjectType, Property, Variable, and Method definitions create a complete hierarchy.

<ObjectType SymbolicName="DeviceType">
    <DisplayName>Device</DisplayName>
    <Children>
        <Property SymbolicName="SerialNumber" DataType="xs:string" />
        <Variable SymbolicName="Status" DataType="xs:string" />
        <Method SymbolicName="Start" />
        <Method SymbolicName="Stop" />
        <Object SymbolicName="Parameters" TypeDefinition="ParameterGroupType">
            <Children>
                <Property SymbolicName="Timeout" DataType="xs:int" />
                <Property SymbolicName="RetryCount" DataType="xs:int" />
            </Children>
        </Object>
    </Children>
</ObjectType>
{
  "ObjectType": {
    "SymbolicName": "DeviceType",
    "DisplayName": "Device",
    "Children": [
      {
        "Property": {
          "SymbolicName": "SerialNumber",
          "DataType": "xs:string"
        }
      },
      {
        "Variable": {
          "SymbolicName": "Status",
          "DataType": "xs:string"
        }
      },
      {
        "Method": {
          "SymbolicName": "Start"
        }
      },
      {
        "Method": {
          "SymbolicName": "Stop"
        }
      },
      {
        "Object": {
          "SymbolicName": "Parameters",
          "TypeDefinition": "ParameterGroupType",
          "Children": [
            {
              "Property": {
                "SymbolicName": "Timeout",
                "DataType": "xs:int"
              }
            },
            {
              "Property": {
                "SymbolicName": "RetryCount",
                "DataType": "xs:int"
              }
            }
          ]
        }
      }
    ]
  }
}

Processing Workflow

graph TD
    A["XML Design File"] --> B["Validator"]
    B --> C["Assigns Numeric IDs"]
    B --> D["Generates BrowseNames"]
    B --> E["Generates DisplayNames"]
    B --> F["Generates Descriptions"]
    C --> G["Code Generator"]
    D --> G
    E --> G
    F --> G
    G --> H["Generated Code"]
    G --> I["Generated Documentation"]

The workflow:

  1. Design - Model is authored in XML
  2. Validation - Validator checks consistency (see Schema Validation)
  3. Augmentation - Auto-generate missing attributes
  4. Generation - Create code and documentation
  5. Output - Type classes, instances, constants

Best Practices

Naming Conventions

  • SymbolicName: Use PascalCase (e.g., TemperatureType, MyObject)
  • BrowseName: Same as SymbolicName (auto-generated)
  • DisplayName: Human-readable label
  • ClassName: For types, remove 'Type' suffix (auto-generated)

Type Hierarchy

<!-- ✓ Good: Proper inheritance -->
<VariableType SymbolicName="AnalogItemType"
              BaseType="ua:VariableType" />

<VariableType SymbolicName="TemperatureType"
              BaseType="AnalogItemType" />

<!-- ✗ Avoid: Unnecessary abstraction levels -->
{
  "comment": "Good: Proper inheritance",
  "VariableTypes": [
    {
      "SymbolicName": "AnalogItemType",
      "BaseType": "ua:VariableType"
    },
    {
      "SymbolicName": "TemperatureType",
      "BaseType": "AnalogItemType"
    }
  ]
}

Validation Indicators

  • Always specify SymbolicName (see Node Design Pattern)
  • Use IsDeclaration="true" for external references
  • Include descriptions for public types
  • Assign unique NumericId values
  • Use ModellingRule consistently (see Instance Design Pattern)

Release Status and Purpose

Release Status

Controls visibility and stability of nodes. Used in Node Design Pattern:

<ObjectType SymbolicName="ExperimentalType"
            ReleaseStatus="Draft">
    <!-- Type under development -->
</ObjectType>

<ObjectType SymbolicName="StableType"
            ReleaseStatus="Released">
    <!-- Production-ready type -->
</ObjectType>
{
  "ObjectTypes": [
    {
      "SymbolicName": "ExperimentalType",
      "ReleaseStatus": "Draft"
    },
    {
      "SymbolicName": "StableType",
      "ReleaseStatus": "Released"
    }
  ]
}

Purpose

Indicates intended usage. Used in Node Design Pattern:

<DataType SymbolicName="RequestType" Purpose="ServicesOnly">
    <!-- Used only in service definitions -->
</DataType>

<DataType SymbolicName="TempStruct" Purpose="Testing">
    <!-- Used for testing only -->
</DataType>
{
  "DataTypes": [
    {
      "SymbolicName": "RequestType",
      "Purpose": "ServicesOnly"
    },
    {
      "SymbolicName": "TempStruct",
      "Purpose": "Testing"
    }
  ]
}

Schema Validation

The validator performs these checks on ModelDesign documents:

✓ Consistency - All References are valid
✓ Uniqueness - No duplicate SymbolicIds
✓ Completeness - All required attributes present
✓ Type Safety - DataTypes match References
✓ Circular References - No invalid cycles

Extensions

Custom Extensions can be added for tool-specific metadata:

<ModelDesign TargetNamespace="..." >
    <!-- Standard content -->
    <Extensions>
        <Extension>
            <CustomMetadata>
                <Property Name="Author">John Doe</Property>
                <Property Name="Version">1.0</Property>
            </CustomMetadata>
        </Extension>
    </Extensions>
</ModelDesign>
{
  "TargetNamespace": "...",
  "Extensions": [
    {
      "CustomMetadata": {
        "Author": "John Doe",
        "Version": "1.0"
      }
    }
  ]
}
