# Description Fix managed browse failure reporting when the session's channel has closed or the caller has already cancelled the operation. - Use the existing checked `TransportChannel` accessor in `ClientBase.MessageContext`, so a closed channel reports `ServiceResultException(BadSecureChannelClosed)` instead of `NullReferenceException` during `Browser` construction. - Check cancellation at entry to `SessionClientExtensions.ManagedBrowseAsync` and the array-based `Browser.BrowseAsync`, before session access or request submission. - Document failure semantics and add unit plus real client/server regression tests for closed channels, pre-cancelled empty/non-empty inputs, Browse/BrowseNext request failures and cancellation, and mixed per-node results. - Preserve existing propagation of request exceptions and the per-node result/error contract. No dependency, analyzer configuration, or public API signature changes. The real-session before-fix run reproduced three failures (closed channel, and pre-cancelled closed channel with empty/non-empty input). All corresponding regressions pass after the fix. ## Related Issues Fix the closed-channel and pre-cancelled managed-browse behavior described in the linked bug report. _If this is a relatively large or complex change, a design must have been discussed in the related tracking issue and signed off (which becomes the Architectural Decision Record (ADR))._ - Fixes #4773 ## Checklist _Put an `x` in the boxes that apply. You can complete these step by step after opening the PR._ - [x] I have signed the [CLA](https://opcfoundation.org/license/cla/ContributorLicenseAgreementv1.0.pdf) and read the [CONTRIBUTING](https://github.com/OPCFoundation/UA-.NETStandard/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md) doc. - [x] I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works and increased code coverage. - [x] I have added all necessary documentation. - [x] I have verified that my changes do not introduce (new) build or analyzer warnings. - [ ] I ran **all** tests locally using the **UA.slnx** solution against at least .net **framework** and .net **10**, and all passed. - [ ] I fixed **all** failing and flaky tests in the CI pipelines and **all** CodeQL warnings. - [ ] I have addressed **all** PR feedback received. ## Validation Windows, .NET SDK 10.0.401. **134 targeted test cases passed**, including existing browser and continuation-point regressions: | Suite | net10.0 | net48 | | --- | ---: | ---: | | BrowserTests + BrowserAuditRegressionTests | 27 passed | 27 passed | | ClientBaseTests | 18 passed | 18 passed | | ContinuationPointInBatchTest managed-browse cases | 22 passed | 22 passed | | Total | **67 passed** | **67 passed** | Tests were added and prove the fix, but coverage percentages were not collected; the combined tests/coverage checklist item is therefore left unchecked. CLA status has not been independently verified. ### Exact test commands and results Commands ran from the repository root. Test output was redirected to local logs. ```powershell # PASS: 27 tests. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Client.Tests\Opc.Ua.Client.Tests.csproj --no-restore -f net10.0 -p:CustomTestTarget=net10.0 -p:NuGetAudit=false '-p:WarningsNotAsErrors=CA2000%3BCA2007' --filter "FullyQualifiedName~Opc.Ua.Client.Tests.BrowserTests|FullyQualifiedName~BrowserAuditRegressionTests" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" # PASS: 18 tests. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Core.Tests\Opc.Ua.Core.Tests.csproj --no-restore -f net10.0 -p:CustomTestTarget=net10.0 -p:NuGetAudit=false '-p:WarningsNotAsErrors=CA2000%3BCA2007' --filter "FullyQualifiedName~ClientBaseTests" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" # PASS: 22 tests, using the freshly rebuilt net10.0 test binaries. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Sessions.Tests\Opc.Ua.Sessions.Tests.csproj --no-build --no-restore -f net10.0 --filter "FullyQualifiedName~ContinuationPointInBatchTest&Name~ManagedBrowse" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" # PASS: 27 tests. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Client.Tests\Opc.Ua.Client.Tests.csproj -f net48 -p:CustomTestTarget=net48 -p:NuGetAudit=false '-p:WarningsNotAsErrors=CA2000%3BCA2007' --filter "FullyQualifiedName~Opc.Ua.Client.Tests.BrowserTests|FullyQualifiedName~BrowserAuditRegressionTests" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" # PASS: 18 tests. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Core.Tests\Opc.Ua.Core.Tests.csproj -f net48 -p:CustomTestTarget=net48 -p:NuGetAudit=false '-p:WarningsNotAsErrors=CA2000%3BCA2007' --filter "FullyQualifiedName~ClientBaseTests" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" # PASS: 22 tests. dotnet test Tests\Opc.Ua.Sessions.Tests\Opc.Ua.Sessions.Tests.csproj -f net48 -p:CustomTestTarget=net48 -p:NuGetAudit=false '-p:WarningsNotAsErrors=CA2000%3BCA2007' --filter "FullyQualifiedName~ContinuationPointInBatchTest&Name~ManagedBrowse" --logger "console;verbosity=normal" ``` ### Production build and patch checks ```powershell # PASS: production Client/Core dependency build, 0 warnings and 0 errors. # Normal warnings-as-errors policy; no analyzer downgrades. dotnet build src\Opc.Ua.Client\Opc.Ua.Client.csproj --no-restore -f net48 -p:CustomTestTarget=net48 -p:NuGetAudit=false --verbosity minimal # PASS: no whitespace errors. git diff --check ``` All six changed files retain CRLF line endings. No build/analyzer diagnostics were reported in the changed files. ### Validation limitations - Initial unmodified-policy test builds failed on unavailable NuGet audit data (`NU1900`) and unrelated existing `CA2000`/`CA2007` diagnostics in test code. - The test commands use the documented offline `NuGetAudit=false` option and command-only analyzer downgrades. TODO: remove those command-only downgrades when the existing certificate/transport test diagnostics are fixed. Repository build/analyzer settings are unchanged. - An initial full `ContinuationPointInBatchTest` fixture invocation rebuilt the net10.0 binaries but was stopped during expensive existing node-cache traversals. It was replaced by the passing managed-browse subset above. - The complete `UA.slnx` suites were **not run**. Full-solution validation, coverage measurement, and CI/CodeQL results remain outstanding.
